The University of Texas at Tyler is located in the east part of Tyler, on University Boulevard (Spur 248) off of Loop 323 Southeast.

UT-Tyler, or UTT, is a comprehensive institution of higher education offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UTT was founded in 1971 as Tyler State College, and renamed Texas Eastern University in 1975. It joined the University of Texas System in 1979.

The main campus consists of 210 acres in a lovely forest setting in the east area of Tyler; other campuses are located in Palestine and Longview. A well-known feature of the campus is the Riter Tower, an 88-foot carillon featuring 57 bells.

The Herrington Patriot Center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio-theater and circuit training, racquetball courts, heated pool and spa, indoor walking/jogging track, and gymnasium/convocation area with basketball/volleyball court and seating for 2,300.

The enrollment at UT Tyler is over 10,000 students. Located on the campus is the widely respected R. Don Cowan Center, the venue for concerts, Broadway plays, famous speakers and other performing arts.

Established in 1926 as part of the Tyler Public School System, Tyler Junior College (TJC) provided to area residents an opportunity for higher education in a local environment.

In 1946, it became a separate entity from the school system, and opened a new campus in 1948.

The TJC main campus is located on E. 5th Street (Highway 64), just east of S. Beckham Avenue.
