The area averages 248 days of sunny weather each year, with an average annual rainfall of 46.7". The first freeze is usually late in November and the last early in March; the average growing season thus lasts 259 days.
During the Summer of 2023, Tyler recorded 38 days at/above 100°. The temperature also was at/above 105° for 21 days. It finally rained in the area on the evening of August 27, delivering the first measurable rain in weeks. It was a daily record-breaking 108° on August 18, and again 108° on August 24-25. The summer ended up as the 2nd warmest on record, and the 6th driest.
It remained hot into early September, setting a record high of 107° on September 7, 2023.
Tyler experienced 44 days with temperatures of 100° or more during the summer of 2022, beginning on June 12 and continuing until August 17. The normal number of days per summer at/above 100 is 7 days. It is classified as the second hottest summer on record, the hottest being in 2011.

It doesn't snow every year in Tyler and East Texas. In 2021, it turned out to be a severe winter, with plenty of snow. First, it snowed about 4" on January 10. Then the big freeze hit, in mid-February with 10-12" of snow/sleet, and temperatures dropping to at/near/below Zero F. The temperature remained below freezing for 201 hours in Tyler, with similar durations around Upper East Texas.

The normal annual rainfall for Tyler is 45.79". Rain records were broken in 2015 with a total of 68.05" of rain in Tyler recorded at Pounds Airport. The last nine months of the year each featured double-digit rainfall amounts. April of 2015 was the wettest month of the year, with 17.1" of rain recorded.
The well above average rain totals were attributed to El Nino. With El Nino, the temperature of the water in the tropics increases and causes changes to temperature and precipitation trends across the globe. For East Texas, with El Nino, the result is above average rainfall, especially during the winter and spring.
Tyler experienced a string of 46 consecutive days with temperatures of 100° or more during the summer of 2011; the streak ended on August 12. But the drought continued.
The normal number of days per summer above 100 is seven days, yet Tyler had 70 days above 100°. The previous record was 47 days in 1998. In addition, Tyler had 25 days at/over 105°.
On August 2 and August 3, 2011, the temperature in Tyler reached 110°, establishing an all-time high temperature for the city.
The normal amount for July in Tyler is 2.16 inches, and in July of 2011 Tyler received only 0.08 inches of rain. According to the Texas State Climatologist, this is the worst one-year drought in recorded state history.
