Universities and Colleges in Tyler

A highly-rated series of public and private schools offer a variety of educational options in the Tyler metropolitan area.

Three institutions of higher education provide a wide range of opportunities for professional and personal growth, with a total enrollment of over 24,000 students. These schools issue about 5,000 degrees and certificates each year.

University of Texas at Tyler

The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler, or UTT) is a comprehensive institution of higher education offering both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. UTT was founded in 1971 as Tyler State College, and renamed Texas Eastern University in 1975. It joined the University of Texas System in 1979.

The main campus consists of 259 acres in a lovely forest setting in the east area of Tyler; other campuses are located in Palestine and Longview. A well-known feature of the campus is the Riter Tower, an 88-foot carillon featuring 57 bells.

The Herrington Patriot Center includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with cardio-theater and circuit training, racquetball courts, heated pool and spa, indoor walking/jogging track, and gymnasium/convocation area with basketball/volleyball court and seating for 2,300.

UT Tyler consists of four professional colleges and one traditional college of arts and sciences, offering over 90 academic degree programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. The institution is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and offers programs in nursing, engineering, pharmacy, pre-Med and teacher education.

The enrollment at UT Tyler in the fall of 2024 was reported to be over 10,500 students, the highest total enrollment ever. Campuses of UT Tyler are also located in Palestine and Longview, as well as the UT Tyler Houston Engineering Center.

Construction has been completed on the College of Pharmacy, located in a three-story building on the UTT campus.

The 60,000-square-feet, $26.5 million W.T. Brookshire Hall for the Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy opened to students in 2015.

The UT Tyler Alumni House is now open. In 2018, the University opened the 140,000sqft Soules College of Business, the largest of UT Tyler's six colleges.

Located on the campus is the widely respected R. Don Cowan Center, the venue for concerts, Broadway plays, famous speakers and other performing arts. Included in the Cowan Center is the Braithwaite Recital Hall.

In fall 2018, UT Tyler announced a 10-20 year long-term master plan which would transform the campus and allow for additional growth in enrollment and facilities. The plan includes a plaza featuring a grassy gathering area, or quad, designed to be the heart of the university. It will cover an area from the Riter Bell Tower to the parking lot in front of the Louise Herrington Patriot Center.

In November of 2019, the University of Texas Regents approved $35 million for an Advanced Nursing & Health Sciences Complex at UT Tyler. The new facility will include teaching facilities, collaborative study space, and a large, simulation hospital focused on caring for patients with acute and chronic diseases. Currently, the UT Tyler School of Nursing enrolls 2,000 students in 15 programs.

Tyler Junior College

Established in 1926 as part of the Tyler Public School System, Tyler Junior College (TJC) provided to area residents an opportunity for higher education in a local environment. In 1946, it became a separate entity from the school system, and opened a new campus in 1948.

The TJC main campus is located on E. 5th Street (Highway 64), just east of S. Beckham Avenue. The college offers over 155 degrees and certifications.

TJC has an enrollment of 13,000 students, and in addition thousands more enroll in TJC continuing education courses each year. The campus has expanded over the years and includes a number of highly respected venues, including the CESSE Planetarium and the Tyler Museum of Art.

TJC’s new $50 million Robert M. Rogers Nursing and Health Sciences Center, located at the the corner of Fifth Street and South Fleishel Avenue, opened in 2015. The 150,000 sq ft building serves about 1,200 students a day.

This beautiful building houses numerous programs, some existing and some new: associate degree in nursing program, dental hygiene program, occupational therapy assistant, wellness and exercise specialist, physical therapist assistant, dental assistant, community health worker, polysomnography certificate program, licensed vocational nursing, medical laboratory technology, radiologic technology, addiction counseling, respiratory care and surgical technology.

The TJC West campus is located on West Loop 323, and is the houses many technical and health degree programs such as welding, automotive technology, air conditioning, surgical technology and vision care. It also includes the School of Continuing Studies, which encompasses workforce development, business development and personal development courses and programs.

TJC's new Energy Center, located at the West Campus, will train students in occupations related to energy and integrated technologies, and will include the first power plant technology program in the state. The 3-story Energy Center opened in 2015.

TJC also has locations in Lindale, Jacksonville and Rusk.

Apache Belles

A girl's drill team was organized at TJC in 1947, named the Apache Belles, and gained national recognition. The group has been entertaining vast audiences ever since, from the football field to the performance stage, with their engaging precision dance, head-turning production numbers, and famous high kick. As one of the premiere collegiate teams of their kind the Apache Belles have appeared in three movies and have met and entertained numerous dignitaries.

TJC Theatre

The Tyler Junior College Theatre presents an excellent variety of productions throughout the year.

Box Office hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call the office at 903-510-2212. The TJC Theatre box office opens one week prior to the opening date. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees begin at 2:00 p.m.

Texas College

Texas College is an historic post-secondary institution, located in Tyler, providing a unique college experience for the students it serves.

The College was founded in 1894 by a group of ministers of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church who were interested in offering a quality education to African American youth.

In the spring of 1984, Texas College received its original charter from the State of Texas and the teaching and learning process became a reality.

The College is an affiliate of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and has a modified open admissions policy that permits it to serve a broad-based traditional and non-traditional student clientele.

The college offers 16 baccalaureate degree programs within four divisions, and features an enrollment of about 1,000 students.
